Girl Time

Abi and I were invited to attend a Secret Keeper Girl Conference in Kearney. We were able to go with our friends the Halls and the Rorhchilds.

The theme was crazy hair and we had no idea how crazy it would be. Girls had everything from balloons to lights to chenille sticks in their hair! The set was very cool too:

They played games, sang songs, had a fashion show and told a story about a peacock raised with the chickens.

It was very fun!

Of course they also talked about modesty and how being 'normal' is overrated. Here is a pic of the girls afterward.

Abi and I stayed over night and continued our girls night out the next day with bowling and getting our nails done. We were excited to have cousin Kim and Aunt Roxanne join us! (Sorry I failed to get pics as my phone battery gave out. 🙉)

Agate Fossil Beds

Grandpa Dan took us in his mobile home to the Agate Fossil Beds north of Mitchell. The kids had a great time looking at the various things inside the visitors center and then hiking the 2+ mile trail!

We also got a good view of E's two sides:

The ornery side and the angelic side!

Thanks grandpa for a wonderful day away!

Vacation Truth

We are on our trip to Scottsbluff for a visit and last bit of vacation before school starts. As is typical, the Farmer decided to take an alternate route without a lot of pre-planning which brings a bit of stress to the drive.

So, he asks me for directions and I load my navigation app on my new iPhone. Amazingly, he thinks that is pretty cool as long as he can go where he wants but when he goes against its advice and has to turn around he asks for the "real" map!

I, of course, tell him it is not fair to blame the app which he has dubbed 'Siri' though it is not actually "her". Anyway, we get it figured out after a few tense moments.

Fast forward a few hours and the Farmer again decides to take a detour and asks, "Will she get mad it I go see the dam."  I tell him I'll just pause the directions and we'll be fine.

As we are getting back on track I turn navigation on again and the Farmer comments how polite 'Siri' always is in giving her directions - insinuating others could learn from her! This is when Abi pipes up with "Dad, you should call her 'Deary' instead because you seem to like her instructions better than mom's"!

Out of the mouth of babes! 😊

Kansas' Biggest Rodeo & the Kats Cousin Reunion

This weekend was Rodeo weekend in Phillipsburg and the Kats family reunion. The Kats family is the Farmer' mother's family. They get together every four years I think. This year each family was distinguished with a colored bandana: our family line was blue:

After sharing a meal, we most of us went to the rodeo parade:

One of the Farmer's cousins was in this car!

After the parade, we had the privilege of going to the old homestead to visit with the Veltkamp family and allow the kids to take naps. Then it was off to the rodeo.

It was decided that Ethan would put his name into the hat for a chance to mutton bust! He was drawn third:

But when it came time to climb onto the sheep, he just could not do it!

Despite this and the rain that came, we still had a great time and the kids enjoyed their first rodeo experience!

Abi's County Club Day Presentations

This is also Abigail's first year of 4-H.  With the help of Grandma Schlatter, she was able to present a vocal solo and a piano piece.  Below are her videos.

The judge must have really liked her because she was given the highest rating of OPS.  Outstanding Performance Sensation.  Abi was very excited.

Homeschool Skate Party

The kids LOVE the skate party and could not wait for it to come this year.

It didn't take long and they were pros skating around the rink.

Even Ethan was getting good at it.

I have a few video clips I will see if I can convert and post!

Mount Rushmore Part 2

Here we are...we finally made it.

There is a walk way that leads to the observation area that has all the flags of the US on poles.

Abi, Nate, and Jonny found the Kansas flag and stood underneath it.
(I was going to take a picture of the flag but it was all wrapped up over the pole :( )

From the observation deck:

The Fam hiked down the trail and took a perch under the faces.

The Fam posing on the rocks.

The Farmer thought of this next one.  He thought it would be very memorable and maybe some day they can take their kids and do the same thing.

Ethan wasn't overly cooperative at this time as he was getting hungry and tired.
But we finally got him in the picture long enough to snap one.

From the Mount, we headed south to the Wind Cave....coming up next!

Mount Rushmore

While visiting my dad in Scottsbluff, the Farmer decided to take a day trip up to Mount Rushmore with the family.

Here the family is out on a walk to take a closer look at some buffalo.

Funny Story:  As we were starting down the hill on this 'non-trail' route to look at the buffalo, I made a simple comment about "This reminds me of our honeymoon." (you know, the one where the Farmer led me off the trail and into poison oak)  Anyway, right after I took the below picture, I got stung!  It HURT! And the Farmer's response: "See, when you say things like that it always comes back to bite you in the butt."  LOL

After we got back to the car and started down the road, a buffalo walked right by on the road.  Does anyone else see the humor in that???

Our first view of the Mount

While traveling, we took the back road.  We drove through several tunnels.  They were very cool and the kids loved them.  We did think it a bit crazy that on all these one lane roads, people would get out and walk all along the road causing more travel jamming.

The other really cool thing along our route were these one lane roads. They were very narrow with hardly any shoulder surrounded by trees.  Very cool.

We're getting closer.

Once at the park, we started counting license plates. We saw 29 different states in just the few hours we were there.

I'll put the rest of the pictures in other posts so that they don't get too long.

Abi's Fair 2013

Abi did really well again this year.  She got several Best of Show Ribbons, and came away with several ideas of what she'd like to try next year.

Plaster Paver with Stones

Wreath

Here she is with a few of her entries:

Plate of 5

Beets

Table Runner (Sewing)

Flowers - Something she'd like to try some other year

She got a Best of Show with her picture of Ethan on the four wheeler.
(he wasn't actually driving it but it sure looks like he is)

She entered several other photos, but here she said she'd like to enter some type of art work next year!
